What’s the ONE Thing You Need to Do?

bigstockphoto_final_piece_series_1181724We are all running around looking for the magic solution, the answer to our problems, a new diet, a new marketing plan, the secret to happiness and other imaginary answers that we think are out there somewhere.  We read books, go to workshops, attend seminars, listen to teleclasses, go on retreats and hire coaches, consultants, teachers, trainers and other experts to show us the way.  Here’s the thing, though, you probably already know the answer!

One of the payoffs of running around looking for the answer is that you don’t have to do that thing that you know you need to do that you don’t want to do.  Stop right now and ask yourself, “What is the ONE thing that I need to do in order to get the results I’m after?”  You might come up with 2 things, you might come up with 10.  Listen to me good!  ONE of those things on your list is probably the thing you’ve been avoiding and it’s the thing that will set you free.  I bet you want some examples.  Okay…

Weight Loss:

You want to lose weight?  Oh, I know this one!  What are the things that you think you need to do to get you the results you’re after?  Exercise, keep a food log, eat particular foods, drink water, don’t eat other foods, watch your portions, eat more often, eat less often, hire a trainer, run a marathon, join a gym, get a buddy, etc.  These are all great ideas.  I bet that ONE of these things, though, is the ONE thing that you really need to focus on.  For me, it’s eat less – period.  I can employ all kinds of different strategies and plans for eating less.  I can get all kinds of support for eating less.  I can take pills that will help me eat less.  I can hire a coach or a trainer that will hold me accountable to eating less.  But, I still need to eat less.  Period.

Get More Clients:

You want more clients?  Haha, I know this one, too!  What are the things you think you need to do to get more clients?  I bet you have a hundred things on that list:  network, speak to your target market, define your target market, re-design your website, start a blog, hang out on Facebook more, Twitter, drink more coffee (with other people), eat more lunches (again, with other people), join another networking group, get a new credential, learn a new skill, add more letters to your name, send an e-zine, have a free offer, lower your prices, raise your prices, advertise, etc.  Oh, I could go on and on and on.  There are hundreds of strategies that you could employ.  Let me tell you something.  NONE of those things is going to get you more clients!  These things will get you contacts, prospects, referral partners and the like, but they won’t get you clients.  You actually have to ask for business – whether it’s in person, on the phone, by email , through Facebook or whatever.  You can have the best marketing plan in the world, if you don’t have a sales plan, you won’t sell anything.

So, what is it for you?  What is the problem you want to solve and what is the ONE thing that you aren’t doing that you need to do to get results?  Don’t get me wrong.  I am not suggesting that you stop doing the 9 other things you’re doing that are actually working.  I just know that there is ONE thing that you’re not doing that you need to start doing.  I also know that the one thing you aren’t doing isn’t more of something that’s working (or not working).  You don’t need to exercise more, blog more, go to more meetings, etc.  You do need to do those things, but you also need to do the ONE thing that you’re not doing.  Figure it out and do it!

If you need help figuring out what your ONE thing is, call me or another coach.  I can’t always see my one thing.  Sometimes I can and I don’t want to do it, can’t do it or won’t do it.  Coaches and consultants can help you with new strategies, twists and awarenesses that can help with that part, too.

4 Questions to Ask Yourself Every Day

bigstockphoto_question_28395I’ve been doing the Body For Life program for two weeks and I’ve lost 6.5 pounds so far.  While I love these result, what I love even more is the process.  Every night, I answer four simple questions before I go to bed.  These questions have applications far beyond an eating and exercise plan and would be great questions for you to ask yourself on a daily basis as you move toward what you want most in your life, whether that’s health and fitness, love and romance, money and success or what ever else you can dream up.

Four Questions to Ask Yourself Every Day:

  1. What are 3 things that I did great today that helped me move toward my goal(s)?
  2. What is one thing that I can do even better tomorrow?
  3. What are five things I can do in the next 24 hours to move me toward my goal(s)?
  4. What are two things I can do in the next 24 hours to support and encourage others?

While it is great to simply ask yourself these questions, it’s even better to actually answer them – every day!  And while it’s great to answer them, it’s even more powerful if you WRITE down those answers.  So grab a pretty journal and get to it!  And if you miss a day, don’t sweat it.  Just get right back on the next day.  And please pop back and let me know what you think and how you’re doing!

Top 10 Reasons to Have a Coach

Do you want to take your business, your relationships, your health or any other part of your life to the next level?  Get a coach!  People are always asking me how I get so much done in a day, a week, a month or a year.  People are always asking me why I am so happy and what’s my secret to my success.  Well, here it is, folks… I have a coach!  Here are 10 reasons why you should have one, too:

  1. You want more – more time, more money, more fun, more happiness, more success, etc.  Most people come to coaching to get more out of their already amazing lives.
  2. You want less – less drama, less c0nflict, less weight, fewer problems, etc.  Coaching is a great forum to explore problems and challenges and to learn more about yourself.  Coaches teach communication tools and personal responsibility.
  3. You are stuck. Let’s face it.  We all get stuck sometimes.  Your coach will see where you are stuck, help you to see it and help you get into action while helping you learn more about yourself along the way.
  4. You want more choices. Coaching is all about choice and choices.  Your coach will help you see that you always have choices and help you explore your choices so that you can get the results you are after in your life.
  5. Accountability. Your coach will hold you accountable to do what you say you are going to do and to keep your commitments.  Your coach will use creative structures to help you succeed, even in areas where you have had challenges in the past.
  6. You want more balance in your life. Most people who are successful struggle with life balance.  If one or more areas of your life is suffering from lack of attention, coaching can help you get results.
  7. You’re bored. Do you have some habits (like over-eating, drinking, watching TV, etc) that are related to boredom?  Your coach will help you find new ways to get inspired and challenged without getting exhausted and overwhelmed.
  8. You want to be more present in your life. Do what you love and love what you do.  Your coach will help you to be more in the experience of your life.  Most of us have built in ways of avoiding certain parts of our life.  Your coach will help you look at those areas and take action rather than living in reaction.
  9. You want to find the easy way to do things. Life doesn’t have to be hard.  When things are hard, that is a sign that something’s not quite right.  Your coach will help you find the easy, fun way to reach your goals.
  10. You are committed to a life of purpose. A coach can help you discover or clarify what your contribution to humanity is and help you develop an action plan to start making a bigger difference in the world.

I have been working with a life coach for over 5 years.  When I began coaching, I was looking for help balancing business and family and to fill the “what’s missing” in my life.  I have since built and sold a business, traveled to new and exciting places in the world with my husband and kids, built my coaching business, redesigned my life so that I can work from home between playing with my kids, and built an 8000 square foot custom home among other things.  Seriously, get a coach!  There is a coach available for every budget.  I am happy to give you a complimentary sample session or to refer you to an outstanding coach in any price range.

SMART Goals

As the New Year is officially behind us, you may find that your resolutions have fallen away as well. The main reason that most people fail to keep their resolutions is because they tend to be “should” goals, like “I should lose 20 pounds”. Most of us are inspired to rebel against our “should” goals and resolutions and normally lose track of them by the end of February.

Instead of beating yourself up, try setting some SMART goals instead:

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable
R – Resonant
T – Thrilling

Smart goals are stated in the positive and in the present tense and they are very specific. They include a measurable component including an aspect of time. A SMART Goal is attainable and you believe you can reach it. It is resonant, meaning that it is consistent with who you are and who you are becoming. It is something that excites you and motivates you, not something that insights dread or that you feel like rebelling against. Finally, a SMART goal is thrilling. A thrilling goal is exciting and a little bit scary. It is a little bit of a challenge and calls you forth into your best self. It is a goal that you will be excited to get up in the morning for.

Examples of SMART goals:

I am having fun losing 2-3 pounds per month for the next 6 months.
I am practicing abundance in my life by saying 5 affirmations every day and playing the money game (see next week’s article).
Every day, I practice being who I need to be to attract the man of my dreams and going to social events at least once per week for the next 12 weeks.

Women Like You

"There are women who make things better... simply by showing up. There are women who make things happen. There are women who make their way. There are women who make a difference. And women who make us smile. There are women of wit and wisdom who - through strength and courage - make it through. There are women who change the world every day... Women like you."

- Ashley Rice
Shine!

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

-Marianne Williamson
